On December 21, the Sun enters Capricorn and ushers in a new season: winter. Each year, this solar shift delivers the darkest day of the year, known as the Winter Solstice. Its arrival signals more than a change in temperature. For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s a turning point when the world grows quiet, the nights stretch long, and the body aches for rest.
Even though our modern culture treats December and January like a sprint, nature offers something different. This is a season of sacred pause. A moment to soften, look back, and honor everything you’ve traveled through so far. The momentum you built. The challenges you held. The joy that cracked open like little pockets of light along the path.
Winter isn’t the most aligned time to set a New Year’s resolution that demands immediate action. But it is a beautiful time to begin wondering what 2026 might want to feel like for you. What might want to grow once the light returns.
One gentle ritual to weave into your Winter Solstice involves dreaming into the year ahead without forcing clarity.

Begin by writing a list of ten things you’d love to experience or accomplish in 2026. These can be simple and soulful like journaling before getting out of bed or putting your phone away to be fully present with your children. They can be adventurous like traveling to Hawaii to learn to surf, or practical like organizing your finances.

Once you have your ten, cut each intention into its own small slip of paper. Place all of them in a jar.

Starting the night after the Solstice, on December 22, pull one slip from the jar and burn it without reading it. Continue this each night. On December 31, you’ll be left with one final slip. Read it. That is the priority the cosmos is whispering for you to focus on in 2026.

Burn it after reading and let the intention settle quietly inside you, like the first spark beneath winter snow.
