Leo New Moon : Are You Leading from Your Ego or Your Heart ? | July 2025

On July 24, 2025, at 12:10 PM Pacific Time, we’ll welcome a New Moon in the passionate, heart-led, fiery sign of Leo. At this time of the Leo New Moon, both the Moon and the Sun will be conjunct at 2°07’ of Leo.

New Moons are powerful portals for intention-setting. They invite us to plant seeds—energetic or literal—for what we want to call into our lives. What are you creating? Manifesting? Reshaping?

These intentions are especially potent when aligned with the themes of the zodiac sign hosting the New Moon. In this case, that’s Leo:

Leo is the Spark of the zodiac.

Leo’s are the light, the heart-led leaders of the zodiac.

Represented by the lion and ruled by the sun, Leos are fiery passionate individuals who love to party and have a good time, they enjoy being around other people and love to celebrate life and just how awesome it is to be alive, but Leos are also likely to express themselves in dramatic, creative and assertive ways.

There is an ego when it comes to Leo energy. Sometime this exaggerated belief we are the star is exactly how we go after what we want. Other times, our ego gets in the way of our success not just professionally, but in our relationships, our habits, etc

Leo is the natural ruler of the Fifth House, the fifth house is all about creativity, self-expression, children, romance, and affection. The fifth house and Leo energy is also associated with royalty, leadership, and being in the spotlight.

To work with this energy more intentionally, take a look at your natal chart and find which house Leo rules for you. This will show you the area of life being activated by the Leo New Moon.

Unless you’re an Aries Rising, Leo will not rule your fifth house—

For example, I’m an Aquarius Rising, so Leo rules my seventh house of marriage and partnership, one-on-one relationships in general. Meanwhile, my daughter is a Leo Rising, so Leo rules her first house of self, identity, and ego. Same moon, different medicine.

So when setting your Leo New Moon intention, ask yourself:

  • What area of my life is being illuminated by this New Moon?
  • What do I want to see grow, shift, or expand here?
  • Six months from now, what would I love to feel or experience in this part of my life?

This Leo New Moon is connected to the Leo Full Moon that will occur on Feb. 1, 2026. Yes—this Leo New Moon is helping you lay the emotional and energetic foundation for your 2026 self. And when that Full Moon arrives, I’m going to ask: What was happening in your life around July 24, 2025? What seeds did you plant back then?

Be intentional with your focus. What you think about, talk about, write about, and dream about—these things matter. Where your attention goes, your energy flows. And that’s what grows.

If your Rising or Sun sign is near 2° of Leo, Aquarius, Taurus, and Scorpio—this New Moon may feel more personal and perhaps more challenging for some of you. With Mercury being retrograde in Leo now after Mars and Venus were retrograde in Leo, we may have to trust now understand later why whatever is leaving our life needed to go at this time.

All About Leo

As a fire sign, Leo carries bold, radiant energy—full of passion, creativity, and joy. Leos are natural initiators. They know how to rally people, make things happen, and turn even the simplest moments into celebrations. With their innate confidence and warmth, they often take on leadership roles with integrity and determination.

But Leo energy can also veer into self-indulgence or come off as a little cocky—not because they’re trying to be arrogant, but because they genuinely believe in themselves. That magnetic self-assurance? It can sometimes be mistaken for ego, but in truth, it’s a powerful energy that grants us independence and the courage to do hard things without always leaning on others.

Think about those moments when you didn’t know how to assemble the chair, fix the leak, cook the dish, or navigate the challenge—but somehow, you did it anyway. You surprised yourself with your own capability. That’s Leo leadership in action. It’s not just about being seen; it’s about seeing yourself clearly and realizing just how powerful you are.

Leos are persistent and often get their way—not because they manipulate, but because they aren’t afraid to be bold, dramatic, or stand center stage. They lead with pride. And for those with strong Leo placements—Sun, Moon, or Rising—there’s often a spiritual lesson in learning how to balance that pride. The growth edge lies in cultivating humility and compassion. Leo’s opposite sign, Aquarius, teaches us to share our brilliance for the greater good—to shine in a way that uplifts the collective, not just the self.

When the Sun and Moon meet in Leo, the energy is potent and heart-centered. Leo rules the heart, so this lunation invites you to open yours wide. I call it self-love season—a time to reconnect with your essence, believe in yourself, and let yourself be fully seen. Roar if you need to. This is your reminder that you are allowed to take up space.

Of course, this New Moon doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Several planets are currently retrograde, intensifying the energy and inviting us to revisit past chapters:

  • Mercury is retrograde in Leo, echoing themes from summer 2023 when Venus was retrograde in this same sign. We may be refining lessons around self-worth, love, and creative expression.
  • Pluto retrograde in Aquarius asks us to reassess power dynamics in collective spaces.
  • Neptune and Saturn retrograde in Pisces invite us to restructure our dreams and reconnect with spiritual truth.
  • Chiron stations retrograde in Aries at the end of the month, bringing themes of inner wounding and warrior healing to the surface.

This is a period of revision and realignment—of rethinking, reimagining, and recalibrating. It may feel intense at times, but trust that it’s all part of a bigger story. One that’s helping you live more in alignment with your truth.

And Leo’s truth is love.

This New Moon reminds us to lead from the heart. To root into joy, gratitude, playfulness, and presence. To remember that the heart isn’t just metaphorically powerful—it’s physically powerful, too. The heart’s electromagnetic field is 5,000 times stronger than the brain’s, and it contains roughly 40,000 neurons—meaning it holds a kind of intuitive intelligence all its own. In many ways, our heart is our true brain.

So let this New Moon bring you back to your heart. Breathe deeply into your chest. Practice heart-centered breathwork. Speak to yourself with love.

Affirm:
I am. I exist. I allow my light to shine.

Because Leo season is not about shrinking to fit in. It’s about expanding to be seen. Big hair, big heart, bold love. Let your soul lead.

On a collective level, what does the Leo New Moon have in store for us?

As with every New Moon, we’re invited to slow down, turn inward, and plant seeds for what we wish to grow in the weeks and months ahead. New Moons are cosmic resets—but they’re also powerful moments of recalibration. With the Sun and Moon aligned, there’s an opportunity to bring harmony between our conscious awareness (Sun) and our emotional, subconscious needs (Moon).

At this Leo New Moon, that invitation feels even deeper—because we’re not only navigating fresh beginnings, but doing so under the weight and wisdom of multiple planetary retrogrades.

Mercury is retrograde in Leo, echoing themes from previous cycles—especially from Summer 2023, when Venus was retrograde in Leo, and more recently from December 2024 through January 2025, when Mars was retrograde in Leo, briefly sliding back into Cancer before re-entering Leo once more. These retrogrades, all occurring in the same sign, suggest a major revision around how we express ourselves, how we love, lead, and act with courage.

Now, Mars is in Virgo and conjunct the South Node, continuing its behind-the-scenes work of refinement, purging, and letting go. Add to that Pluto retrograde in Aquarius, Saturn and Neptune retrograde in Aries, and Chiron about to station retrograde—and you get a moment in time that is rich with requests from the Universe: to review, revisit, revise, reframe.

You may find yourself circling back to something that first stirred in mid-2023. Something around identity, expression, courage, or worth. Don’t ignore what’s resurfacing—it’s returning so it can be healed or reclaimed in a deeper way.

The biggest question this lunation seems to be asking is: Where are you leading from—your ego or your heart?

And if you don’t think of yourself as a leader, maybe the better question is:
Where am I giving my power away, and why?
Do I still feel aligned with those I’ve chosen to follow?
Am I acting out of fear or people-pleasing rather than soul truth?

This New Moon in Leo invites all of us to reclaim our inner authority—to lead ourselves, first and foremost, with love. Because true leadership doesn’t demand the spotlight. It radiates from within.

At the end of July, Mercury will form a cazimi with the Sun in Leo—a moment where Mercury, the messenger, is purified and supercharged by the heart of the Sun. Cazimi transits often bring flashes of clarity, divine downloads, or important turning points in our perception and communication.

And because this cazimi is happening in Leo, it may bring sharp insight around ego-led vs. heart-led leadership—both within us and in the world around us.

We may see shifts in how we think about leadership, how we use our voice, or even experience a change in leadership or direction, either personally or collectively. If someone or something has been holding a position of power through force, control, or ego—this cazimi could illuminate the cracks. At the same time, it could highlight the quiet, courageous voices who are leading with love, authenticity, and heart.

This moment reminds us: true leadership is not about domination, but devotion.
Not about being the loudest in the room, but the one most rooted in truth.

So as Mercury meets the Sun in Leo, stay open to what gets illuminated. You may find a message in your own heart that changes everything.

If you are a Rising or Sun: Leo, Aquarius, Taurus, and/or Scorpio, you are likely to feel this New Moon in Leo the most and find it more turbulent to navigate as there are challenging angles forming with your natal planets. Remember challenges are good for our growth. And before we can welcome new things into our lives, we have to make room by letting go of the old energy.

If you are a Rising or Sun: Gemini, Libra, Sagittarius, and/or Aries, you are likely to enjoy this New Moon in Leo as harmonious aspects are forming with your natal planets. You are likely to enjoy or experience something positive with this energy. Take advantage of this powerful momentum.

If you are a  Rising or Sun: Cancer, Virgo, Capricorn, and/or Pisces, this is perhaps not the most eventful New Moon for you as your natal planets are not really activated by the Leo New Moon. However, it’s still helpful to look back at the area of your life ruled by Leo as other energy is at play.
